Carolina Panthers WR Jordan Matthews Agrees to Deal With New Orleans Saints

Matthews to Join Saints After Panthers Release

Former Carolina Panthers wide receiver Jordan Matthews has agreed to a deal with the New Orleans Saints, the team announced Wednesday. Matthews was released by the Panthers on Tuesday after spending the past two seasons in Carolina.

Matthews Brings Experience to Saints Receiving Corps

Matthews, 28, has played in 88 career games with 50 starts. He has 335 career receptions for 3,843 yards and 24 touchdowns. Matthews has also been a productive punt returner, averaging 9.0 yards per return on 86 attempts.

The Saints are hoping that Matthews can provide some much-needed depth to their receiving corps. The Saints lost receiver Ted Ginn Jr. to free agency this offseason, and Tre'Quan Smith is coming off a torn ACL. Matthews is a proven receiver who can play both inside and outside, and he should be able to contribute immediately to the Saints' offense.

Panthers Release Matthews After Disappointing Season

The Panthers released Matthews after a disappointing season in which he caught just 25 passes for 309 yards and two touchdowns. Matthews was also dealing with a hamstring injury that limited him to just 10 games.

The Panthers are hoping that Matthews' release will give them some salary cap flexibility. The Panthers are currently over the salary cap, and they need to make some moves to get under the cap before the start of the regular season.

Matthews Excited to Join Saints

Matthews said he is excited to join the Saints and is looking forward to contributing to the team's success.

"I'm excited to be a part of the New Orleans Saints organization," Matthews said. "I know they have a great team, and I'm looking forward to helping them win a championship."
