Highland Park Scots Defeat Lake View Chiefs in Playoff Thriller
Highland Park advances to Region I-5A Division I semifinals
AUSTIN, Texas — The Highland Park football team defeated the San Angelo Lake View Chiefs 28-21 in a thrilling Class 5A Division I Region I quarterfinal playoff game at Reeves Athletic Complex on Friday night.
The Scots (11-1) advanced to the regional semifinals, where they will face the winner of Saturday's game between Amarillo Tascosa and Lubbock Coronado.
Lake View (9-3) took an early 7-0 lead on a 1-yard touchdown run by running back Keontae Burns in the first quarter.
Highland Park answered back with a 3-yard touchdown run by running back Jackson Hamilton in the second quarter.
The Chiefs regained the lead on a 2-yard touchdown run by quarterback Sebastian Rodriguez with 2:27 remaining in the second quarter.
The Scots tied the game at 14-14 on a 23-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Chandler Morris to wide receiver John Rutledge with just 24 seconds left in the half.
Highland Park took the lead for good on a 32-yard field goal by kicker Cade Fennegan with 6:03 remaining in the third quarter.
The Scots extended their lead to 28-14 on a 1-yard touchdown run by running back Hunter Washington with 10:25 remaining in the fourth quarter.
Lake View cut the lead to 28-21 on a 5-yard touchdown pass from Rodriguez to wide receiver Dylan Terrell with 1:06 remaining in the game.
The Chiefs recovered an onside kick, but the Scots defense held them to force a turnover on downs and seal the victory.
Morris completed 18 of 28 passes for 195 yards and one touchdown.
Hamilton rushed for 114 yards and one touchdown on 23 carries.
Rutledge caught six passes for 82 yards and one touchdown.
Rodriguez completed 19 of 35 passes for 209 yards and two touchdowns.
Burns rushed for 102 yards and one touchdown on 23 carries.
Terrell caught six passes for 100 yards and one touchdown.
