IND vs NZ: Twitter roasts Shubman Gill for his 'brain fade' that gifted Ajaz Patel the easiest of wickets
Gill's poor shot selection leaves fans baffled
Team India opener Shubman Gill had a day to forget on Day 1 of the ongoing second Test match against New Zealand in Mumbai. The right-handed batter, who has been in impressive form of late, threw his wicket away in a bizarre fashion, leaving fans and experts alike baffled.
With India cruising at 80/0 in the 26th over, Gill attempted to go for a big shot off the bowling of Ajaz Patel. However, he completely mistimed the shot, skying the ball high in the air. Patel, who was stationed at mid-off, had an easy task of completing the catch.
Twitter reacts to Gill's dismissal
Gill's dismissal did not go unnoticed by the cricket fraternity on Twitter, with many taking to the social media platform to express their disappointment over the batter's poor shot selection.
"What a brain fade from Shubman Gill," wrote one fan. "He was batting so well and then he just threw his wicket away."
Another fan tweeted, "Gill needs to learn to be more patient. He's got the talent, but he needs to use his head more."
Experts weigh in on Gill's dismissal
Even the experts were left unimpressed with Gill's shot selection. Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar said, "That was a very poor shot from Gill. He had no business playing that shot at that stage of the innings."
Former New Zealand pacer Simon Doull added, "Gill is a very talented player, but he needs to be more careful with his shot selection. He can't afford to give away his wicket in such a soft manner."
India in a commanding position despite Gill's dismissal
Despite Gill's dismissal, India remain in a commanding position in the match. Captain Virat Kohli and Cheteshwar Pujara have put on a solid partnership for the second wicket, taking India to 127/1 at the time of writing.
India will be hoping to build on their strong start and post a big total in the first innings. The hosts will also be confident of bowling out New Zealand cheaply on a spin-friendly Wankhede Stadium pitch.
