Kiwi sporting heroes to shine at Halberg Awards

It promises to be one of the most fiercely contested Halberg Awards in years, with Kiwi contenders lining up to claim glory at Thursday night’s ceremony in Auckland.

The Halbergs, New Zealand’s premier sporting awards, recognise and celebrate the outstanding achievements of our athletes, teams and coaches on the national and international stage.

This year’s field is particularly strong, with a number of athletes having enjoyed standout seasons.

Halberg Awards hotly contested

The battle for the supreme Halberg Award is expected to be a close one, with a number of contenders in the mix.

Canoeist Lisa Carrington is the defending champion and will be looking to add to her record-breaking tally of four Halberg Awards.

She faces stiff competition from the likes of All Blacks captain Sam Whitelock, Black Ferns skipper Ruahei Demant and swimmer Lewis Clareburt.

The Team of the Year award is also hotly contested, with the All Blacks, Black Ferns and America’s Cup winners Team New Zealand all in the running.

The Coach of the Year award is another closely fought category, with Ian Foster (All Blacks), Glenn Moore (Black Ferns) and Gary Stead (White Ferns) all in contention.

The Halberg Awards will be held at Spark Arena in Auckland on Thursday night and will be broadcast live on Sky Sport.
