Jordan Matthews promoted, Panthers reinforce receiver and corner depth going into Week 9
Carolina Panthers make key roster moves ahead of Week 9 matchup
The Carolina Panthers have announced a series of roster moves ahead of their Week 9 matchup against the Atlanta Falcons. Most notably, wide receiver Jordan Matthews has been promoted from the practice squad to the active roster.
Matthews, a veteran of eight NFL seasons, was signed to the Panthers' practice squad in September. He has appeared in one game for Carolina this season, catching one pass for 12 yards.
Panthers bolster secondary with additions of Jaycee Horn, CJ Henderson
In addition to promoting Matthews, the Panthers have also made two key additions to their secondary. Cornerback Jaycee Horn has been activated from injured reserve, while cornerback CJ Henderson has been claimed off waivers from the Denver Broncos.
Horn, a first-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, missed the first eight games of the season with a foot injury. He is expected to start opposite Donte Jackson at cornerback.
Henderson, a former first-round pick of the Jacksonville Jaguars, was waived by the Broncos on Tuesday. He has appeared in 23 games in his NFL career, including 16 starts.
Depth key for Panthers
These roster moves come at a crucial time for the Panthers, who are currently 4-4 and in the thick of the NFC South race. The team has been hit by a number of injuries this season, so the addition of Matthews, Horn, and Henderson should provide some much-needed depth.
Matthews will give the Panthers another experienced receiver to go along with DJ Moore, Robbie Anderson, and Shi Smith. Horn and Henderson will add depth to a secondary that has been dealing with injuries to A.J. Bouye and Rashaan Melvin.
The Panthers will be back in action on Sunday when they host the Atlanta Falcons. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. ET.
