Ligue 1 News: Safonov Steals the Spotlight as Lens Upsets PSG
Matvei Safonov, the Russian goalkeeper for RC Lens, made history on Sunday when he helped his team upset Paris Saint-Germain 3-1 in Ligue 1.
Safonov, 23, made a string of impressive saves throughout the match, including a penalty stop in the first half. He also commanded his penalty area well and organized his defense effectively.
Lens's victory was their first over PSG in over a decade, and it moved them up to second place in the Ligue 1 standings.
PSG, on the other hand, suffered their first league defeat of the season and dropped to third place.
Safonov's performance was particularly impressive given that he was making his first start for Lens since joining the club from Krasnodar in the summer.
However, he has quickly adapted to French football and has shown that he has the potential to be one of the best goalkeepers in Ligue 1.
Safonov's heroics were not the only reason for Lens's victory.
The team also played with great determination and discipline, and they were able to take advantage of PSG's mistakes.
Lens took the lead in the 23rd minute when Florian Sotoca scored from close range. PSG equalized through Neymar in the 43rd minute, but Lens regained the lead in the 57th minute through a Loïs Openda penalty.
Lens sealed the victory in the 92nd minute when Wesley Saïd scored on the counterattack.
PSG will be looking to bounce back from this defeat when they face Marseille in the Champions League on Wednesday.
Lens, meanwhile, will be hoping to continue their good form when they host Lille in Ligue 1 on Saturday.
