Minnesota United advances in MLS playoffs
Loons defeat Vancouver Whitecaps 3-1 in first round
SAINT PAUL, Minn. – Minnesota United advanced to the second round of the MLS playoffs with a 3-1 victory over the Vancouver Whitecaps on Sunday afternoon at Allianz Field.
Robin Lod opened the scoring for the Loons in the 17th minute, heading home a cross from Emanuel Reynoso. Adrien Hunou doubled the lead in the 35th minute, finishing off a nice passing sequence involving Reynoso and Franco Fragapane.
Vancouver pulled one back in the 55th minute through Brian White, but Minnesota restored its two-goal advantage just five minutes later when Fragapane scored his first MLS playoff goal.
The Loons will now face either the LA Galaxy or Nashville SC in the second round of the playoffs. The date and time of that match will be announced later.
Keys to the game
- Minnesota's attack was clicking. The Loons created a number of chances throughout the match and were clinical in front of goal.
- The defense was solid. Minnesota limited Vancouver to just a few good chances and goalkeeper Dayne St. Clair made a number of big saves.
- The crowd was electric. The fans at Allianz Field were in full voice throughout the match and helped create a great atmosphere.
