Moldovan Voters Cast Ballots Abroad in Record Numbers
Voter turnout surpasses expectations in second round of presidential election
Nearly 1,500 Moldovan citizens residing abroad cast their votes by mail in the second round of the country's presidential election.
This represents a significant increase from the first round of voting, when only around 500 ballots were cast by mail. The high turnout is attributed to a number of factors, including increased awareness of the importance of voting and the ease and convenience of the postal voting process.
The majority of the votes cast by mail came from Moldovans living in European countries, particularly Romania, Italy, and Spain. There were also a significant number of votes cast from North America, particularly the United States and Canada.
The postal votes are expected to play a significant role in the outcome of the election. The two candidates in the second round are Maia Sandu, the pro-European former prime minister, and Igor Dodon, the pro-Russian incumbent president.
Sandu is leading in the polls, but Dodon is hoping to close the gap with the support of voters in the breakaway region of Transnistria, which is not under the control of the Moldovan government.
The second round of voting is scheduled to take place on November 15. The winner of the election will take office on December 23.
