Outbreak of Unknown Virus Among Tourists in Turkey
Health Officials Investigate Mystery Illness
Health officials in Turkey are investigating an outbreak of an unknown virus that has sickened dozens of tourists in the country's southern province of Antalya.
The virus, which has not yet been identified, has caused symptoms including fever, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain.
The outbreak began earlier this week, and as of Friday, there were 24 confirmed cases, according to the Turkish Ministry of Health.
Tourists from Several Countries Affected
The tourists who have been affected come from several different countries, including Russia, Germany, and the United Kingdom.
Most of the tourists who have been sickened were staying at all-inclusive resorts in the popular tourist destination of Belek.
The Turkish Ministry of Health has advised tourists who are experiencing symptoms of the virus to seek medical attention immediately.
Government Takes Steps to Contain Outbreak
The Turkish government has taken steps to contain the outbreak, including:
- Isolating sick tourists in hospitals
- Increasing surveillance of tourists at airports and border crossings
- Disinfecting hotels and resorts in the affected area
- Advising tourists to avoid eating raw food or drinking tap water
Experts Believe Outbreak Will Be Contained
Experts believe that the outbreak will be contained and that it does not pose a major health risk to the general public.
"The outbreak is isolated to a specific area and is being closely monitored by health officials," said Dr. Mehmet Ceyhan, a spokesman for the Turkish Ministry of Health.
"We are confident that we will be able to contain the outbreak and prevent it from spreading to other parts of the country."
