Russian goalkeeper Sergey Safonov gets the first clean sheet in a Ligue 1 match for PSG
Russian goalkeeper Sergey Safonov played his third match for Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) on Saturday in a Ligue 1 game against Toulouse and kept a clean sheet.
The 22-year-old shot-stopper, who joined the French giants from FC Krasnodar in the summer, had previously played in the UEFA Champions League and last season's Trophee des Champions but had yet to keep a clean sheet for his new club.
Against Toulouse, Safonov made a number of crucial saves, and his side eventually won the match 3-0. Safonov is the first Russian goalkeeper to play for PSG and only the second Russian player to represent the club after Alexander Mostovoi in the late 1990s. His clean sheet against Toulouse will be a huge confidence boost for the young goalkeeper, and it will be interesting to see if he can continue to impress in the coming weeks and months.
Safonov's performance was praised by PSG coach Christophe Galtier, who said: "Sergey had a very good game. He made some important saves and helped us to keep a clean sheet. I am very happy with his performance."
Safonov's clean sheet was also a good sign for the PSG defense, which has been somewhat shaky in recent weeks. The addition of Safonov to the squad could provide the stability that the team needs to challenge for the Ligue 1 title this season.
