Sao Paulo GP start moved earlier as Sunday Qualifying confirmed amid rain chaos at Interlagos
Qualifying for the Sao Paulo Grand Prix in Brazil has been moved to Sunday due to heavy rain at Interlagos, with the race start also brought forward by one hour.
Heavy rain has caused chaos at Interlagos on Saturday, with a number of incidents forcing a red flag during qualifying, which was due to begin at 4pm local time (7pm GMT). After several delays, qualifying was eventually abandoned, and it’s now been decided that it will take place on Sunday morning, starting at 10am (1pm GMT).
The race start time has also been moved forward by one hour, to 2pm local time (5pm GMT) to allow for the qualifying session to take place first.
The decision to move qualifying to Sunday was made due to the deteriorating track conditions, which have been caused by heavy rain showers that have fallen throughout the day. After a number of incidents during qualifying, it was decided that the track was not safe for qualifying to continue, and the session was red-flagged. After a delay of over an hour, it was announced that qualifying would be abandoned, and that it would take place on Sunday morning instead.
The decision to move the race start time forward by one hour was made in order to allow for the qualifying session to take place first. The race will now start at 2pm local time (5pm GMT), one hour earlier than the original start time of 3pm local time (6pm GMT). The change in start time will allow for the qualifying session to take place in the morning, when the track conditions are expected to be better.
