Shubman Gill, New Zealand Heroics Leave India Needing 280 at Wellington
Debutant Ajaz Patel claims all ten wickets in India's first innings as Shubman Gill's half-century helps India recover from disastrous start to reach 191-6 at stumps on day one
India lost three wickets for no runs in their first innings in Wellington on Friday after being put into bat by New Zealand, but were rescued by opener Shubman Gill, who top-scored with 52 before being caught and bowled by debutant Ajaz Patel.
When India lost their first three wickets with no runs on the board, it looked like they might follow on from their capitulation against New Zealand in Kanpur last month which saw them lose by 10 wickets.
But Gill and Cheteshwar Pujara (26) steadied the Indian ship with a 61-run stand for the fourth wicket before Patel struck twice in quick succession to remove Pujara and Shreyas Iyer (0) cheaply.
India's struggles continued when Rishabh Pant (10) was bowled by Patel to leave them 148-6, but Gill and Ravichandran Ashwin (18 not out) added 43 for the seventh wicket to help India close on 191-6.
Patel finished with figures of 10-119, becoming only the third bowler to claim all 10 wickets in an innings against India in Tests.
India have been without skipper Virat Kohli, who has returned to India to attend the birth of his first child, and vice-captain KL Rahul, who is nursing a hamstring injury.
