Avalanche Warning

In the Austrian state of Tyrol, the avalanche risk has reached the highest level of 5 in many places. The authorities, therefore, advise against any outdoor activities off the slopes. In the neighboring canton of Graubünden in Switzerland, the avalanche risk is also high. A skier was carried away by a slab avalanche on Saturday afternoon.

Closed roads

In Vorarlberg, the Flexenpass (L 198) between Lech and Zürs had to be completely closed due to snow and avalanche danger. On the Hahntennjoch (L 10), chains are required. In Tyrol, there are currently no road closures due to snow, but the authorities advise against driving on some roads.

Canceled events

In the municipality of St. Anton am Arlberg, the traditional "White Ring" race had to be canceled due to the weather conditions. The event was supposed to take place on Sunday and the organizers are looking for a replacement date.

Bregenzerwald avalanche commission: "A minute too late and it would have hit her"

On Saturday afternoon, a skier was buried in an avalanche on the Rüfikopf in Lech. Fortunately, the 32-year-old was able to free himself and was rescued by the mountain rescue service. The Bregenzerwald avalanche commission later classified the avalanche as a slab avalanche.

The avalanche commission points out that the skier was very lucky. "A minute later, and the avalanche would have hit her," says Patrick Nairz from the avalanche commission.

The avalanche commission advises against going off the slopes and avoiding steep slopes. The risk of avalanches remains high in the coming days.
