The Sharks Give Pitt Exactly What’s Needed for Defensive Success
Return of experienced players bolsters lineup
After a disappointing end to their season last year, the Pitt Sharks are looking to bounce back in a big way. They have added several experienced players to their defense, which should help them improve on their 20th-ranked defense from a year ago.
One of the biggest additions is linebacker SirVocea Dennis. Dennis was a two-time All-American at Georgia before being drafted by the Washington Commanders in the fifth round of the 2021 NFL Draft. He was waived by the Commanders at the end of training camp last year, but he is expected to be a major contributor for the Sharks this season.
Another key addition is defensive end Habakkuk Baldonado. Baldonado was a four-star recruit coming out of high school and played two seasons at LSU before transferring to Pitt. He had eight sacks and 13.5 tackles for loss in his two seasons with the Tigers, and he is expected to be a disruptive force for the Sharks this year.
Improved depth and athleticism
In addition to Dennis and Baldonado, the Sharks have also added several other experienced players to their defense, including:
- Linebacker Brandon George (North Carolina)
- Defensive tackle Devin Daniel (Penn State)
- Cornerback Josh Henderson (North Carolina)
- Safety Khari Coleman (Texas)
These additions give the Sharks much-needed depth and athleticism on the defensive side of the ball. They should help the Sharks improve their pass rush, coverage ability, and tackling.
New defensive scheme
In addition to the new players, the Sharks have also installed a new defensive scheme under coordinator Randy Bates. Bates is a veteran coach who has spent time with the New York Jets, Philadelphia Eagles, and Tennessee Titans. He is known for his aggressive, attacking style of defense, and he should help the Sharks improve their overall performance on that side of the ball.
Conclusion
The Sharks have made a number of significant additions to their defense this offseason, and they are now poised to be one of the best defenses in the ACC. With a veteran-laden lineup and a new defensive scheme, the Sharks should be able to make a major impact on the field this season.
