A Night of Remembrance and Celebration

The St. Petersburg Philharmonic will hold a special concert on October 28th to honor the legacy of its former artistic director, Yuri Temirkanov, who passed away on November 30th, 2022. The concert will feature works by Brahms, Tchaikovsky, and Shostakovich, and will be conducted by Valery Gergiev, the Philharmonic's current artistic director.

A Maestro's Legacy

Yuri Temirkanov was born in St. Petersburg in 1938 and began his musical studies at the Leningrad Conservatory. He rose quickly through the ranks of conducting, becoming the principal conductor of the Kirov Opera and Ballet at the age of 33. In 1988, he was appointed artistic director of the St. Petersburg Philharmonic, a position he held until 2018. Under Temirkanov's leadership, the Philharmonic became one of the world's leading orchestras. He was known for his passionate and energetic interpretations, and for his commitment to new music. He also played a major role in promoting Russian music abroad.

A Night of Tributes

The October 28th concert will be a fitting tribute to Temirkanov's legacy. The program will feature three of his favorite works: Brahms's Symphony No. 4, Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 5, and Shostakovich's Symphony No. 10. The concert will also feature performances by several of Temirkanov's former students, including Vasily Petrenko, Semyon Bychkov, and Paavo Järvi. These conductors will each lead one of the three symphonies on the program. The concert will be a celebration of Temirkanov's life and work, and a reminder of his profound impact on the world of classical music.
