BREAKING: 4 dead, 17 hurt in fiery 15-car freeway pileup, West MI students OK
Four people were killed and 17 others injured in a fiery 15-car pileup on I-94 near Kalamazoo, Michigan, on Wednesday afternoon.
The crash involved multiple semi-trucks and passenger vehicles and caused a massive fire that shut down the freeway for hours.
The victims have not yet been identified, but authorities say they include two adults and two children. The injured were taken to nearby hospitals, where they are being treated for various injuries.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation, but authorities say it appears to have been caused by a chain-reaction collision. Witnesses say that a semi-truck rear-ended another semi-truck, causing it to jackknife and collide with several other vehicles.
The crash caused a massive fire that spread to several vehicles and burned for hours. Firefighters were able to eventually extinguish the fire, but not before it caused extensive damage.
The freeway was shut down for several hours while crews worked to clear the wreckage and investigate the crash. Traffic was backed up for miles in both directions.
The crash is the deadliest in Michigan since 2009, when six people were killed in a crash on I-94 near Battle Creek.
The crash is still under investigation, and more information is expected to be released in the coming days.
