RSL advances to MLS Cup for first time since 2013
Real Salt Lake has reached the MLS Cup for the first time since 2013 after defeating Minnesota United FC 2-1 in the Western Conference final on Sunday.
After falling behind to a first-half goal by Minnesota's Robin Lod, RSL rallied with second-half goals by Sergio Córdova and Tate Schmitt to secure the victory.
RSL will face the Philadelphia Union in the MLS Cup on Saturday, November 5, at 1 p.m. MT at Banc of California Stadium in Los Angeles.
Córdova's goal levels the score
RSL fell behind in the 23rd minute when Lod's shot from outside the box deflected off RSL defender Justen Glad and past goalkeeper Zac MacMath.
RSL nearly equalized in the 35th minute when Jefferson Savarino's shot from the top of the box hit the crossbar.
RSL finally got the equalizer in the 51st minute when Córdova headed home a cross from Andrew Brody.
Schmitt's goal gives RSL the lead
RSL took the lead in the 64th minute when Schmitt scored on a header from a corner kick by Savarino.
Minnesota nearly equalized in the 75th minute when Franco Fragapane's shot from inside the box hit the post.
RSL held on for the victory and will now face the Philadelphia Union in the MLS Cup.
RSL reaches MLS Cup for first time since 2013
RSL's victory over Minnesota was the team's first in an MLS playoff game since 2016.
RSL is now one of just four teams to reach the MLS Cup three times since the league's inception in 1996.
RSL will be looking to win its first MLS Cup since 2009 when it takes on the Philadelphia Union on November 5.
