Simeone: Games amid fatal floods make no sense

Atlético Madrid coach Diego Simeone said it made no sense to be playing matches amid fatal flooding in neighboring Valencia

Atlético Madrid coach Diego Simeone said on Saturday it made no sense to be playing matches amid fatal flooding in neighboring Valencia.

Valencia is set to host the Copa del Rey final between Real Betis and Valencia on Saturday, despite the death of at least one person and the evacuation of hundreds from their homes due to the flooding.

When asked about the game going ahead, Simeone said: "I think that when these things happen and there are fatal consequences, it makes no sense to play football matches.

"I imagine that the authorities involved in making these decisions will do what corresponds, but I give my condolences to the families who are suffering. Beyond the game, these things seem absurd to me."

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said on Saturday he would not be attending the final due to the flooding.

The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) said it was monitoring the situation and would make a decision on whether the game would go ahead later on Saturday.

The flooding in Valencia has been caused by heavy rainfall in recent days, which has led to the overflow of the Turia River.

The river runs through the city of Valencia and has flooded streets and homes, causing widespread damage.

The RFEF has said it will donate 100,000 euros to help those affected by the flooding.
