Sporting's Super Striker: On to United with Amorim? I Don't Think So
Pedro Gonçalves Once 'On the Radar' for Man United Move, Will He Follow Manager Amorim to Old Trafford?
Reports Suggest Striker May Follow Manager Despite Recent Sporting Contract Extension
Portuguese media outlet Record has reported that Manchester United are interested in signing Sporting Lisbon striker Pedro Gonçalves, who has been in excellent form this season, scoring 19 goals in 33 appearances in all competitions.
The 24-year-old has been linked with a move to the Premier League in the past, with Manchester United and Liverpool reportedly interested in signing him in January 2022. However, Gonçalves ended up signing a new contract with Sporting in December 2022, which includes a €80 million release clause.
Gonçalves has been a key player for Sporting this season, helping the club to win the Primeira Liga title and reach the semi-finals of the Champions League. He has scored 11 goals in the league this season, which is the second-highest total in the division behind Benfica's Gonçalo Ramos (15).
Gonçalves' contract extension was seen as a sign that he was committed to Sporting, but the latest reports suggest that he could be tempted to leave the club if Manchester United come calling. The Red Devils are in need of a new striker, with Cristiano Ronaldo leaving the club in November 2022 and Anthony Martial struggling to find form.
However, it is worth noting that Gonçalves has a €80 million release clause in his contract, which means that Manchester United would have to pay a significant fee to sign him. It is also worth noting that Gonçalves has only recently signed a new contract with Sporting, so he may not be keen on leaving the club so soon.
